Northlane is an Australian metalcore band from Sydney, formed in 2009. Northlane comprises guitarists Jon Deiley and Josh Smith, drummer Nic Pettersen, bassist Brendon Padjasek and vocalist Marcus Bridge. Northlane have released five studio albums: Discoveries (11 November 2011); Singularity (22 March 2013), which reached No. 3 on the ARIA Albums Chart; Node (24 July 2015), a number one album; Mesmer (24 March 2017) and Alien (2 August 2019). At the ARIA Music Awards of 2015 Northlane won the Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album category for their album Node. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2017, Northlane won again with Mesmer.

Northlane third studio album, Node, was released on 24 July 2015, with Will Putney producing, which reached No. 1. Smith stated that Node features "a lot more ambience and rhythm section driven stuff" as well as "more depth and dynamics" and possibly more clean vocals..Additionally, in 2015, Northlane hopes to perform in New Zealand, South East Asia, Portugal and, in the summer, Germany. Northlane also hope to do a headline tour of the UK some time after playing Download Festival there. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2015 Node won the Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album category. Since early 2016, Northlane live show and costumes have evolved. Jon has worn an array of masks, including an anti-pollution mask, a black medical mask and a rhinestone covered mask which conceals his entire head, plus a pair of large black contact lenses. Alex wears a long wrap-around jacket he acquired while in Japan. Nic wears a black singlet and medical mask. Josh wears a white long sleeve and Marcus wears a moth eaten black t-shirt with bandages on his hands. Mesmer debuted at #3 on the ARIA Charts, the third Northlane release in a row to debut in the top 5 in Australia. Northlane fifth album titled Alien release on 2 August 2019, and a week later peaked at No. 3 on the ARIA Charts.
Musical style & Tuning: Northlane's musical style has been described as metalcore and progressive metal. According to Smith, Deiley writes most of Northlane guitar/bass tracks, and "before he left, [vocalist] Adrian [Fitipaldes] was writing most of the lyrics. Now it's [Smith] and [vocalist] Marcus [Bridge] for the most part." Northlane use have used a variety of tunings, all utilising baritone 7 string guitars (with their first record an exception to this, as the album was tracked with a 6 string baritone). On a number of songs found on the albums since Singularity, the guitars are tuned to F-Bb-F-Bb-Eb-G-C, essentially drop Bb (a tuning which they used on Northlane debut EP) with a low F. This allows them to use a standard drop tuning with access to a lower string for heavier sections. Alex Milovic similarly uses a Dingwall bass guitar tuned F-Bb-F-Bb-Eb (an octave below the five lowest strings of the guitar). They have also used drop G# (G#-D#-G#-C#-F-A#-D#) in select songs over all of their releases. For "Obelisk" and "Node" (off of Northlane aforementioned album Node), they use a capo in addition to their open F tuning, on the 1st fret (Node) and 3rd fret (Obelisk).

Discoveries album received generally favourable reviews. KillYourStereo called it the best Australian album of 2011. Sam Radojcin of Loud, praised Northlane unique take on the progressive genre, and claimed they had potential. The cube featured on the album art is a "printed out, and origami folded, edited image from the Hubble Space Telescope"

Singularity (2013)
Genre: Metalcore, progressive metal
Singularity album has received positive reviews from critics. Hannah Gillicker from Already Heard gave the album 4 out of 5, saying: "Northlane have confirmed at least one thing with Singularity and that's that they know how to craft a bloody good record. Totalling at 10 tracks, there's little to criticise here and Northlane are definitely playing their cards right." KillYourStereo gave it 85 out of 100 and said: "In a harsh manner of speaking, Singularity isn't necessarily ground breaking, but the album takes a style with current and strong appeal and puts its own spin on things. The charm here is that Northlane promote positivity and ambition. They are doing something they love and the results match. This is an inspiring record in so many ways. Musically evolved and emotionally diverse." Rock Sound rated the album 8 out of 10 and said: "With Singularity, Northlane have created a familiar but also fresh and engrossing record, showcasing true progress and growth as a band. At times it's a tad repetitive, but that only serves to stop the album being something truly special."

Node (2015)
Genre: Metalcore, progressive metal, alternative metal
Node is the first album to feature vocalist Marcus Bridge after the departure of Adrian Fitipaldes in 2014. It also marks the group's first slight departure from Northlane heavier metalcore roots and towards a more alternative and experimental sound. The album received mostly positive reviews, but also mixed reviews from several critics. Wall of Sound rated the album 8.5 out of 10.

Mesmer is the fourth studio album, through UNFD, with no announcement prior to the release. It was produced by David Bendeth and recorded at The Barber Shop Studio in Hopatcong. It follows the group's slight departure from their metalcore roots and towards a more alternative and experimental sound, as established on Northlane previous release, Node. It peaked at No. 3 on the ARIA Albums Chart. It is the last Northlane album to feature their founding bassist Alex Milovic as a member of Northlane.

Alien (stylised as A1IEN) is the fifth studio album by Australian metalcore band Northlane. The album's second single, "Bloodline", shows the group's continuity of slight departure from Northlane metalcore roots and towards a more alternative and experimental sound, as established on Northlane previous releases, Node and Mesmer. It also marks the group's first shift into different genres, as they blended into the album elements of nu metal, industrial metal and EDM. This is the last album to feature Northlane founding bassist Alex Milovic, who only appeared on the track "Vultures". At the ARIA Music Awards of 2019, the album won the award for Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album, making Alien Northlane third ARIA-award winning album.
